As the food-centric week day talker is not even close to the well-oiled machine of 15-year-old inspiration and network sister "The Vista,Inch it is also nowhere close to the instant SOS situation of CBS' "The Talk." With only mild modifications to its recipe, ABC could easily supply a tasty dish for audiences to "Chew" on. The central problem to leave the very first three episodes is definitely an overstuffed method of infotainment, pricing quantity over quality. While their chemistry has not quite gelled -- especially difficult using the show still hurrying from segment to segment -- there's not necessarily a bad apple within the bunch. And all of the voices boosts the options for audience identification and interest. Unlike say, "The Rachael Ray Show," where audiences have to take or leave just one type of celebrity chef chatter, "The Chew" hopes there is no such factor as a lot of cooks in the kitchen area. Letter from Toronto: Coppola's Twixt Is Stubborn Old-Coot Filmmaking; Stillman's Damsels Hardly Dazzles

Francis Ford Coppola’s Twixt is kind of stupid and kind of amazing, a horror movie-fairytale hybrid with an inscrutable plot, some gorgeous images and two brief sections shot in 3-D. This isn’t the great film Coppola’s devotees have been waiting for him to make. But it’s infused with more of Coppola’s spirit, as we know it, than Youth Without Youth and Tetro, both of which were sluggish and self-serious. Twixt is a bit of a mess, but it’s also joyful and wicked, with a great, roly-poly sense of humor about itself. In its imaginative WTF-ness, it reminds me of Bob Dylan’s gloriously whacked-out Masked and Anonymous, just the sort of thing you’d expect a crackpot genius left to his own devices to make. Val Kilmer plays washed-up horror novelist Hall Baltimore, who, when he arrives in the small town of Swan Valley to hawk his new book, discovers that the local bookstore is actually a corner’s worth of shelves in the hardware store. Local sheriff Bobby La Grange (an extra-grizzly Bruce Dern) drops by to say “hi” and to ask Hall how it feels to be “the bargain-basement Stephen King.” But he also, it turns out, may have an idea for Hall’s next book: Down at the morgue, he’s got the body of a young woman with a stake through her heart. Plus, this is a town where strange and horrible things have been known to happen. You know this because there’s a clock tower with seven faces, each one showing a different time. Plus, Tom Waits steps in occasionally to narrate the thing. And there are ghosts here for sure, which Hall encounters in his sleep: Edgar Allen Poe (a perfectly cast Ben Chaplin) knocks around giving writing tips; husband-and-wife motel managers harbor weird secrets under their floorboards (and she treats us to a rousingly creepy rendition of “Big Rock Candy Mountain,” a bit of goth-Americana that would have been right at home in Masked and Anonymous); and, most notably, an adolescent ghost shimmers through the landscape in a white dress, her eyes rimmed in red, braces flashing on her possible vampire teeth. Her name is Virginia (she’s played by a luminous Elle Fanning) and she could be one of the potential victims of a local child murderer; or she could be Poe’s long-lost cousin/wife; or she could be a stand-in for Hall’s own daughter, whom he lost in a boating accident (a detail that’s hard to parse in this otherwise purely fanciful film, given that Coppola lost his own son in a boating accident). You’re probably wondering how all this comes together. The answer is, it kind of doesn’t. And the real-life sections of the movie are something of a drag, a bit too much of Bruce Dern shaking his wattles for my taste. But the dream sequences — if they actually are dreams, that is — are gorgeous to look at, rendered in satiny black-and-white with spots of significant color (blood red, lemon yellow) painted in. And Coppola’s method of signaling the audience when it’s time to put on the glasses is both silly and brilliant in its straightforwardness. Twixt is a mess, plotwise, but it’s hardly torture to watch. And Coppola — who, it’s worth remembering, got his start with schlock king Roger Corman — seems to be having a good time instead of just trying to impress us with his artiste schtick. How can we deny him? Twixt isn’t the return of the great master, but it’s a fine example of stubborn old-coot filmmaking. Coppola does what he wants, how he wants. He sells no wine before its time — only when he’s good and ready. Another old-timer of sorts returns to Toronto this year: Whit Stillman, who hasn’t made a film since The Last Days of Disco in 1998, is now back with Damsels in Distress, an arch and vacant little comedy that follows a clique of young college women through their ho-hum romantic travails. The characters, and the movie itself, seem lost in time, which may be part of the point: Greta Gerwig, as the somewhat unstable leader of the girls’ clique, favors full skirts and ballet slippers, like a ’50s debutante. Stillman’s camera seems to appreciate Gerwig’s preternaturally honest, questioning face. But he doesn’t know what to do with her gangly-graceful physical and comic timing — too often she just seems stilted and awkward. Analeigh Tipton (recently seen in Crazy, Stupid, Love.) fares a little better — she’s the most appealing of the bunch. But the movie is confused and wayward, featuring slapdash musical numbers for no good reason other than to try to inject a shot of much-needed romantic charm. The vaccine doesn’t take. 'Real Life is Kind of Hard For Me': A Candid Nick Nolte on Falling Off the Wagon For Warrior

After a career in Hollywood that has spanned four decades, two Oscar nominations, three wives and one notoriously bad mug shot — Nick Nolte returns to the big screen this Friday with his most personal role yet: that of a former alcoholic who desperately seeks forgiveness from his mixed martial arts-fighter family (Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton) in Gavin O’Connor’s Warrior. During the film’s press day last month, both O’Connor and Nolte confessed that the struggles of Nolte’s character Paddy O’Connor were based largely on the actor’s own cycle of substance abuse, sobriety and redemption-seeking — a cycle that sadly continued while the pair filmed Warrior in and around Pittsburgh last year. Last month, the 70-year-old actor met with Movieline to discuss his R-rated Warrior adventures, his unlikely handgun crusade and the secret to playing a good, chain-restaurant-obsessed gorilla. There are some interesting parallels between Warrior and your breakthrough project Rich Man, Poor Man 35 years ago. There, you played a working class boxer with a strained relationship with your brother. In Warrior, you’re the estranged father of two working-class MMA fighters who go head-to-head in the ring, strained relationships all around. Do you think there is a reason why you’re returning to these themes? No, other than the fact that Gavin wanted to explore those themes. I was supposed to do [Gavin’s 2008 drama] Pride & Glory as the father, and I bailed on him about two weeks before shooting because I had some problems. You would think that would end a relationship [with a director] but instead, it strengthened it. Gavin said that he based your character on you, even incorporating some of your own experiences into the film. Is there anything you asked him to put into or take out of the script? No, Gavin knows me pretty well. [Laughs] I did talk to Gavin about how to deal with the boys off camera considering that in the movie, they’re not communicating with their father. I said, “I think it would probably be a good idea that I don’t socialize with the boys. Should we go down that track even though it’s extreme?” Gavin thought that was right because when actors socialize [in between takes], all the work that you do preparing that relationship is ruined. It gets too intimate and you can’t get back out. It was safer this way. Did you have any other suggestions for Gavin? I told him, “Maybe I shouldn’t drink while we film.” He said, “Yeah, that would be a great idea.” Well, I put myself in a hole right there. I’m in Pittsburgh a week and that goes out the window. Did you have a local bar where you did your drinking? No, I had this assistant and she had a boyfriend who was a little… [Pauses] Mixed-up. The assistant was a little mixed-up too. We had been rehearsing a week and I said to her, “Should we do the right thing and go home? Or do we do the wrong thing and go to a club and meet up with your boyfriend? I’ll leave it up to you.” Oh no! That was a terrible thing to do. Of course she said, “Let’s meet with Bobby.” We meet with Bobby even though I have to rehearse in the morning at 10 o’clock. Come 5 o’clock, we’re still at this apartment. There was booze and you know, other stuff. We rolled into rehearsal the next morning and I went straight to Gavin’s assistant and said, “Man, you wouldn’t believe the night I had. There was more cocaine there, more alcohol, this guy with tattoos all over him and rings, this girl who wanted to leave with me but she had been with him for 10 years and he was threatening to kill me. We barely got out of there alive.” Again, oh no. Of course, he repeated it to Gavin, who didn’t say anything to me until after rehearsals. He pulled me aside and said, “What are we going to do, Nick? I trusted you, and the very first thing you do is violate the rules. Was it the assistant?” I said, “No, no. You can’t [fire her]. It was me. Here’s what I should do. I should hang out with Jimmy from Pittsburgh.” Now, Jimmy from Pittsburgh is a fictional name. We named him that, and that is the handle he has taken on back there. Jimmy from Pittsburgh is an ex-narcotics agent, and he is my age. I said, “I gotta hang out with Jimmy and I gotta do something for the city of Pittsburgh.” Gavin said that was fine. So what did you do for the city? Well, Jimmy said, “I gotta great thing. We’re going to go to the Steelers stadium and we’re going to scroll the last three years of people that have been shot by handguns in Pittsburgh. The list is about 300 or 400 long. The mayor is going to speak, then I think he had a preacher who was going to speak, then Jimmy was going to speak and then he told me I was going to speak for twenty minutes. I said, “We’ll do that.” So Jimmy swung by at 8 o’clock to pick me up. I got in the car and I could just tell that something was wrong. Jimmy said, “It’s been bad.” I said, “What happened?” He said, “Five cops got killed last night. Some kid shot them with handguns he had. There hasn’t been anything like this.” He said, “Son, this has turned into a big thing. The cardinal is going to be there, the mayor, the governor, the preacher. You’re still going to speak for 20 minutes.” So we went, we spoke and it was depressing. Everyone was down. The next day, Jimmy and I swung over to see this chief. Jimmy said they’re were going to have little party for the kids and then he told me, “Nine of those kids are orphaned.” We got over there and it was all the guys in blue and the kids were freaked out. They were just scared. They had lost their dads and everything. So I told the guys, “Get the kids out of here and get the television reporters down here so we can have some fun on TV and goof around.” So that’s what we did. Gavin’s at home and he sees me on the TV with all the kids. Everyone sees me on TV, and the bus drivers would stop, the cab drivers would stop if they saw me on the street and say, “Hey Nick, need a ride?” Everything just worked out great.

Susan Lucci Blasts ABC Head of Daytime for Demise of All My Children

Susan Lucci Hell hath no fury like Susan Lucci scorned! The upcoming paperback edition of her autobiography, All My Life: A Memoir, will include a bonus epilogue in which the daytime star lashes out at ABC execs for the death of All My Children. The soap, which was canceled in April, filmed its last episode on Tuesday and will air its final broadcast episode on Friday, Sept. 23. "I think our being in this position is the result of some very bad decisions by you," she wrote, addressing ABC head of daytime Brian Frons. The excerpts were run in the New York Post Saturday. Specifically, she says Frons installed a new head writer for the show in 2008 - Charles Pratt, Jr. by name - whose writing she called "subpar." (It's not the first time the actress has blasted Pratt either.) Frons also relocated the show from New York to Los Angeles, causing several cast members to exit, and pushed out creator Agnes Nixon. Susan Lucci on All My Children's last day, the big cliff-hanger and her future online Lucci, who has played Erica Kane since 1970, continued that Frons told her in April that All My Children would be replaced with a food series that was "cheaper to make." "An iconic show was losing out to greed... If Brian Frons could show his bosses that he could save the network 40 percent...he could keep his job even if the rest of us lost ours," she writes. "I watched Brian Frons' decisions destroy the production of our show and the lives of people on both sides of the country." All My Children: Jordi Vilasuso and Lindsay Hartley on the Castillos - and what might have been And Lucci didn't stop there. Frons appeared "self-congratulatory" when he announced the cancellation to the cast, she says, describing him as having "that fatal combination of ignorance and arrogance." Eddie Murphy Will Eddie Murphy's next role be Academy awards host? It will likely be if ceremony producer Brett Ratner will get his way, Deadline reviews. Ratner is placed to see the Academy of movement Picture Arts & Sciences on Tuesday that Murphy is his top option for the gig, based on the report. Brett Ratner and Don Mischer to create Academy awards ceremony Murphy, who had been nominated for the best Supporting Actor in 2006 for Dreamgirls, is apparently thinking about hosting. But he most likely won't obtain the gig alone. Eight-time Academy awards host Billy Very will probably be associated with the show in certain capacity after he expressed curiosity about coming back to host in a La film screening recently. Very has formerly located the show in 1990-1993, 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2004. This is Murphy and Ratner's second collaboration. Murphy stars in Ratner's next film, Tower Heist, which hits theaters on November. 4. Healthy Hollywood: Get Movin Monday NY Jets QB Mark Sanchezs Game Is On!

By Terri MacLeodNEW YORK., N.Y. -- I never work out, jokes New York Jet Mark Sanchez to Healthy Hollywood. The hotshot quarterback teases his oh-so fine physique is all natural no sweat required! I may not know a lot about football, but I do believe Marks upkeep on his toned tush takes more than good genes. After being pressed for his biggest workout secret, Sanchez finally fessed up strengthening his core is key. Its a long season, you take a lot of hits and if youre strong in your core, the center part of your body, your overall body usually feels pretty good. Healthy Hollywood got the opportunity to hang with a few of the players from the NY Giants and NY Jets at a recent event celebrating the naming of MetLife Stadium, which is home to the two NFL teams. With the kickoff of the NFL season this week, lots of folks have football on the brain, so Healthy Hollywood did its best to scour the event roster and find out some workout secrets from Sanchez and a few of the other players. NY Giant Eli Manning agrees with his on-field rival, Sanchez, and says for QBs its all about the core. Youre not so concerned about getting stronger and bigger, just maintaining, staying healthy and making sure you can take some hits. For NY Jet David Harris, its all about cardio. A lot of cardio, running on the treadmill, running up the hills, be on a bike, you have to do something to get your heart rate up. Harris, who admits to letting up on his hardcore workout routine during the off-season, says once he suits up he takes off the extra pounds fast. [I start] eating right and stop doing things I shouldnt be doing. I stay in shape, I would show you my abs, but nah, teases NY Jet Darrelle Revis, who adds, I really try not to get too out of shape, I mean after the season you want to take a couple weeks off to rest your body after a long season, but you want to get right back into it. Revis is big on healthy foods not hearty man-entrees, eat pasta, eat vegetables, drink water I mean just simple nutrients that you need. I am not a fan of the gym, states NY Giant Antrel Rolle, who reveals to Healthy Hollywood, If I worked out, I would be like 230 pounds right now, but I do a lot of running. As a defensive linebacker your main thing is to stay in shape you have to do a lot of running with those fast receivers. As for the rumor football players love to do yoga, Rolle says, I tried it and I quit after two days. Real football players do Pilates at least thats the word from Revis.
